And we Americans aren't savages brutes that live to shead blood in the Middle East. Its just a stereotype. I have nothing against Canadians, and don't really erm think anything of the; its just a border country to the US living in a Western Civilization.

How do you think Nationalites start that seperates different cultures, Chinese, Arab, Mexican, Japanese, Filipino, etc., apart from each other? I mean, just because you're Asian doesn't mean you're the same as another person from Asia. How do you think these subcultures came to be? I've just been wondering this

...You copied what I said.

Without contact with other cultures they have to learn to communicate with each other and have their own ways of doing things. I think its all a matter of like, a certain royal family starts a nation, and their whole gene pool is passed on throughout the whole country. Also though, a culture's way of life affects what they look like, its just evolution.

Maybe we could use this thread to point out some of the things about our own countries?

For a good deal of information written by me about my home land then please follow this link. I posted it in another thread a few weeks back.

My view.
dcspectre23
my brother lived in canada for a year, is it true you call people from Newfoundland, "newfies"
Falwith
Yes, we do, even the people themselves. (I ought to know, as my wife's family is from there, the whole damned crew of them) Also, Newfies (note the cap in Newfie?) tell some of the very best Newfie jokes out there. Mos are initially presented as a Polak (sp?) joke, or a blonde joke, but in Newfoundland, they take the brunt and make it themselves, so it's funny anywhere, especially home.

The thing I get a kick out of is the way a lot of people try to mock us and end up sounding twice as stupid as they want us to look. Continual use of "eh" is one (although we do use it a fair bit) and the climate is another. I have actually seen people from Maine come here in July, with skis on the roof of their car and ask where to head for good skiing this time of year. I point North and tell them about 10 000 miles thataway.

For fun, how many would like to try mocking our accent? (every country has an accent, they're all a bit different) You know, the famous method we have of saying "out" and "about"?
Jason290
Yeah, every country has a certain stereotype, it's just that some are worse than others. Nothing is aimed directly at you when we say things like that.
Hurricane
What are you talking about... eh? laugh.gif. I think Canadians are great and all stereotypes are pretty stupid. I wish they would just get rid of stereotypes, since they lead to ignorance. You can't just assume some thing just because a few people from a country do things, dress, talk, act a certain way that everyone from that country does the exact same thing. That isn't correct about royal families Corporate_Nothing, royal families usually have complete different gene pools from the population they rule over because they keep their genes within the royal families.

Yes you know, we canadians aren't all dressed as lumberjacks with a hockey stick in one hand and a curling broom in the other, cohabiting with mooses and beavers in snow covered forests, drinking Molson Ex, eating bacon, and singin' our national anthem all day long with Jean Chretien's horrible accent (lol i dont even think this guy has a primary language) laugh.gif

But in the other hand, i do not deny my traditions... Yes, I eat bacon, Yes, I like hockey, Yes, I drink beer, Yes we have more snow than in the US, and yes i have an accent, you down south may call it horrible, but eh, i think the people here have the same opinion of the Texans' accent...

Anyway those types of cliches are well accepted by the masses, so i don't think we're about to see them disappear...

In fact, here's a pic of the average canadian guy

Im a white dude, wear g unit clothing etc, buy bottled water and keep it in my fridge, have 1 sister that lives in new york, and have never seen a gazel in my life. People, just keep it real...

Do you hate the French canada

ilovefood
Canadiens? Why would they say that. I'm serious, I've not hear much of this but I have heard some and I think it's full of shit.
biggceemoney
i personally really like other countries and different cultures. i think that the differences between everyone is the most interesting part of it all and in fact its the very thing that actually brings people together. i enjoy learning from other cultures and one thing thats great to do is laugh. thats why stereotypical jokes are some of the most hilarious to me (thats of course if everyone participating in the joking are okay with the jokes being told).

a personal example of how stereotypes can be really funny. its not a different country but i have a friend who is gay, and a really open minded, nice, funny person. we joke around all the time and i dont say things like "fag" (cause that word isnt really funny), but when i joke with him, its very stereotypical and vice versa. i'll say things like "you are so homosexual" or whatever. we are always dying of laughter and its because we can appreciate the differences between us, use them in our jokes, and then laugh at them afterwards.

i know this isnt about Canada, but i think the same standards are applicable. i think way over the top impressions of Canadians saying "eh" and "aboot" are comical when done right. to me its no different if i were watching Chappelles Show when he jokes about a white family called The Niggars. hes not afraid to take an explosive issue like race and turn it into absolute hilarity.

i love maple syrup, i love Canadian bacon, snow is pretty cool, im not against hockey, and BC bud is some of the tastiest on earth. while i dont drink any type of Molson, i love pancakes and whats more old school than a cop on a horse? simply put, i love Canada and the Canadians that inhabit that wonderful wonderland of snow and ice. keep rocking Canada, America loves you!

Do you hate the French canada

Le Québec was nearly split apart from canada in 95, there was only a 1% majority that voted against the separation, too bad i wasnt there to vote...

i'm for the separation, not because i hate Canada, but because Québec and Canada have different culture and traditions, i feel more "québécois" than "canadien", that's all

why do you think there's that sponsorship scandal in ottawa? after 95, canada was scared that quebec would really split apart, so they did some huge pro-canadian campaign, sponsoring public events, like the Montreal Grand Prix, to show us that Canada isn't bad and that it brings us important events

maddog-67
Yeah I live in Canada. The temperatures in BC are about 30-35°c in the Summer and in the spring i think usually 20°c. Autumn it gets about i think 7-13°c, And Winter it gets as cold as -10°c.

"aboot " I'v never heard a Canadian say about that way ... I'v been to the states on numerous ocasions (bein only an hour away from the border n all) and if anything it is them who say " aboot " ... dur! ( dumb u.s. retard )

"eh" A common term ... sure we use it. It's a pretty good abreviation of a question if you ask me ... it's just like sayin " pardon me, i didn't hear ya there " or somethin like that but it sounds better. I say "eh" all the time ... If you ask me i would think people in the states get too carried away mockin canada by sayin " eh " that they say it more than us Canadians. just be glad we don't mock you guys ...

East side, you forget all the things that you would be missin out if you left Canada ... for instance all your trade with the states would be over, free trade would be gone. Quebec and Canada have different cultures so you have to split? Canada is a land of different cultures ... we accept you for the people you are and treat you fairly ... the gov't should give you guys more federal say but the people of canada (not to forget that you are one) accept you for who you are. I feel that the bills that have been set up are fair ... english businesses have been forced out and those who are in must speak french or whatever. I still don't see why you would want to split ... it makes no sence

lol at the comment about ginger beer ... i'v only had it once but it's pretty good. It's stronger than alcoholic american beer ... thats sad for havin no alcohol in it lol. Our beer (molson n some others) kick ass compared to that cheap, weak american stuff.

Americans have no understanding of the world ... they don't even know what's goin on at the borders of where they live. The only reason the bash us or whatever is cause of the way thier gov't portrays us in thier commericals n other things that make thier country seem superior ... it's all a promotional thing for thier gov't. They have to brainwash thier citizens lol ... it's all in the propoganda

O ya ... i live in a town close to Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I hope Quebec doesn't break away... dividing a country only makes both sides weaker. I think Americans and Canadians just have a big misunderstanding of each other, although you probably don't like to admit it, both of your countries do have many things in common and are quite similar. Americans and Canadians do have a magor misunderstanding of each other but it is mostly americans who need to open thier eyes and look past the shit that thier gov't shovels in thier faces.

Canada isn't totaly like that, I'v never seen a comercial which stereotypes americans. I have always looked at americans as the same people as us ... they are just extremely arogant towards us for some unknown reason and treat us as a different people. On the other hand it is because of thier commercials n stuff

Don't think that i don't know what I'm talking about either ... I'm Canadian, born in Canada, raised in Canada and livin in Canada yet i go to the states at least once a week, mostly Michigan but some others too. The commercials there so badly bash and give a stereotypical veiw of Canadians.

I had a Canadian PE (well, really RTE/DFP, but no one cares) teacher last semester, and he was a short, scrawny guy with almost no body fat and he was good at gymnastics and soccer (football) by, um, a lot. In fact, he was good at all athletics. He always wore Puma brand clothing and he claimed to drive a Mercury. So I decided that he had to say "aboot" and "eh" and eat backbacon and become a mounty and ride a moose with a snowplow attatched to the front, and basically forced ever Canadian stereotype I could think of on him (I changed the name of every sport to mooseball) until he admited that he had actually, at one point, ridden a moose. So that just goes to show you that stereotypes are always right, and all blanket stements are correct. if you disagree, you're a communist.

I'm the only American in my family. The rest are Canadians - from Moose Jaw, originally. I've spent alot of time in Western Canada, and aside from the exhorbitant prices of cigarettes & booze, I like it just as much (better if you count politics into that).

Canadians don't say "eh" as often as we make them out to. They say "y'know" alot. So much so that I even do it, despite having never lived there. I even had a boss point out to me once that I used that phrase too often.

Another stereotype is that all Canucks are super nice. Bullshit! In general, their manners a bit more evolved than us yanks', but I've met a few that were absolute c***s***ckers.

My only real complaint about Canadians is their attitude towards indians (I know I'm generalizing here, but..) in general, the way indians are treated up there is completely uncalled for....just disgraceful.

But Canada has better beer, better cigarettes & better vinegar. They also have Rodger's Golden syrup and MacIntosh's Toffee (if you've never tried either, than you wouldn't understand why they're so important).

They also have better public schools up there. I was always in awe of how educated my cousins were compared to me.

k i havent read any of the posts past the first page, and still i didnt read them all so excuse any repetitions.

have any of you noticed that we all are on the same forums talking with each other and we are oblivious to the fact of where we come from. I am from Canada, could you tell if I hadn't told you once already. You can't hear an Aussie's accent on a forum (im actually dissapointed cuz Aussie accents are the best), and we all get along. Think about it, we're all the same people guys and we all have the same likes, dislikes, attitudes and etc. some may be different and we might share different opinions but i would argue that most of the people on this forum all come from places that share similiar values and ideals (Australlia, USA, Canada, UK). So why can't we get along when we can see eachother and hear and touch each other? Why does the wall suddenly get put up and these stereotypes come forward? because we allow it to.

This is the case, by watching the news on American TV Stations, Americans look a lot more stern and defining and they wont take shit from no one, they do in many respects look like bullies and that's where we gain our stereotypes. The difference is that us Canadians know that there are many people who are very civilized and much like Canadian people (laid back, funny) in the US. We also understand that not everyone is a middle-east hating asshole. We also understand that in Canada, WE HAVE THOSE TYPE OF PEOPLE TOO!
Now, if you watch a Canadian TV Station while they are showing the news, then you will realize that Canadians look a lot less stern and more friendly. That's just who we are, there are a few exceptions much like you guys have. Overall Canadians are just laid back and relaxed and funny. I mean, we're the funniest nation in the World!

I am Canadian, yes. There are things about me that are not like the stereotypes and things that are:

- I don't play hockey but I do enjoy watching it, yet I AM NOT DEVESTATED BY THE LOCKOUT!
- I prefer sports like Soccer (AC Milan and Man U) and Baseball (RED SOX)
- I DO say "Eh!" a lot
- I do not have that typical Canadian stereotype accent
- I don't like beer
- I don't wear lumber jack clothing although i do sometimes like the plaid biggrin.gif
- I prefer winter activities.
- I own 4 computers and a TV and two... wait for it... CARS! (actually i dont own 3 of those computers or the TV or the cars, my parents do tongue.gif )
- I do not live in an Igloo, i live in a house made out of wood, bricks and a cement foundation.
- ... that's all i can think of right now...

I agree with the native part 100%. It's not Canadians in general that treat the natives bad .. it's the government and rasist bastards.
