So I finally got round to review Max Payne 3 for my site for you all to see. I won't post the entire thing here but instead put a few highlights.

Linearity

Quote

It can be said that through a combination of story telling, technology and gameplay Rockstar create experiences to be remembered. They are a company that aren’t afraid to experiment or push boundaries and also one that learn from previous mistakes and mix it up a bit. You could say Max Payne itself is another example of them mixing it up a touch. Rockstar are used to bringing us explosive non-linear experiences as seen in Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto and even Bully. Max Payne 3 isn’t non-linear, Max Payne 3 is a full on cinematic and linear shooter.

Sometimes there is a question people have over whether or not linearity is a good or a bad thing, often games like Call Of Duty are criticised for being linear but for me it depends on whether or not the rest of the game balances on the fact that it is linear, we look at things such as the story, the variation in environments and sequences, the combat, length and cinematics themselves. When you add all these factors together Rockstar have crafted an experience that stands as one of the best shooters in this generation of games and this is without even going into the multiplayer.

Length

Quote

The campaign is actually quite a lengthy one comprising of 14 chapters each taking me about 45 minutes to one hour to complete. So we’re talking on average about 7-12 hours depending on difficulty and skill which is a good length for a shooter such as this. Again the one complaint people might have is perhaps due to it being quite lengthy you might feel it gets tedious at times but fortunately due to the changes in location from level to level and the variety of set pieces you never really feel at any point it gets tedious or repetitive and it manages to captivate and stay fresh throughout the entire game.

Multiplayer

Quote

Multiplayer is something I won’t really talk about in too much depth because it in itself feels like a full fledged game rather then something that’s been tacked on. There are a few wrinkles to iron out though in my opinion.

As an example you do get perks in the game for your characters like Bullet Time or improved armour and one called Paranoia which makes allies show up as enemies. There is a touch of imbalance on certain perks but over time it can be fixed. I also had a few issues with spawn points but again it’s something that can be fixed.

Besides these issues which to be fair plague any online game the multiplayer is a lot of fun, the idea of crews which will carry on over into GTA5 is a great one for building up friends and allies in game and the variety of modes and customisation options could make Max Payne 3 a serious contender in the multiplayer arena.

Great review man, well done! Personally, I'm still debating whether to buy the game outright or wait until it's a lengthier rental (it's currently an overnighter at the local rental store) before purchasing, because I have other multiplayer games that I'm essentially addicted to (FIFA 12, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty). I'll probably end up waiting until a friend is done with it and borrowing it off them haha... The joys of being jobless :(
I used to be ScarfaceII, and then .Scarface.
